ABOUT WOOL

Foxtrot Home New Zealand Wool Baby Blanket.

Dreamed up, designed and produced by us, Foxtrot Home’s Wool Collections are the culmination of years of research and discovery to bring you new homewares that hero a homegrown product with a proud history - New Zealand Strong Wool.

Determined to follow the ethos of our pure French Flax Linen bedding and sleepwear, our wool collection is sustainably sourced and ethically produced. We also bring things a little closer to home. Made in New Zealand in every sense of the word, the premium lambswool is sourced directly from Kate and husband Jeremy's 740ha sheep farm in Central Hawke’s Bay, and is home to their young family. So, each throw and baby blanket is sourced and produced here in Aotearoa, NZ.

The wool comes from Romney and composite lambs (a cross between Romney and Suftex sheep), born in August and September, weaned in November, and shorn in December/January. The lambswool is then scoured locally and delivered to Wellington to be spun and dyed by local makers. The finished yarn makes its way to Auckland for knitting into our luxurious range of wool throws and baby blankets. Coming full circle, the finished blankets are dispatched from Waipukarau, a stone’s throw away from where the journey began.

We are passionate about doing good for wool. Wool is an incredibly undervalued resource that boasts wonderful, natural properties. Wool is hypoallergenic, breathable, fire-resistant and completely biodegradable at the end of its life. Our wool is grown yearly within farming practices that strive to support the land and our natural environment.

Romney sheep are well-known for their strong wool and our throws and baby blankets are luxurious and durable. Choosing to knit our blankets (over weaving) allows us to create larger pieces than is commonly found in the marketplace and also results in a beautiful drape and superior feel.

Our wool range is made with absolute heart and passion, our homegrown collection supports New Zealand’s wool industry as well as local makers and producers. Please contact us with any questions you have regarding the provenance and traceability of our wool. We are proud of its journey and more than happy to share this with you.

RESTOCK INFORMATION
CARE & WASHING

How do I wash and care for my Wool Throw or Blanket?

Wool is naturally odour resistant due to the fibre’s unique properties which means they rarely need cleaning —just shake and air outdoors. For deeper cleaning, dry-cleaning is best.

Things to remember when caring for your wool blanket is:

  • Dry-clean only.
  • Do not bleach.
  • Do not machine wash.
  • To give your wool throw blanket some love it often just involves airing them out. Simply take them outside, shake it well, and hang it in a light breeze area to loosen any accumulated dust or dirt.
  • To dry wool blankets, it is best to lay them flat (without stretching) on clean towels.
  • If you need to store your wool throw blanket, keep it in a cool, dark location, stored in an airtight container or bag.

FAQ

Linen

How do I wash and care for my linen?

  • Warm machine wash with plenty of water
  • Do not bleach or use stain removers such as Sard. No dry-cleaning.
  • Use only gentle, LIQUID detergents
  • Warm tumble dry
  • Line dry in shade if possible
  • Try to avoid direct sunlight if possible as the colours in our linen do fade. Use only lighter colours in rooms with strong sunlight!
  • Linen always has wrinkles. If you want to iron, use a warm setting and press when slightly damp.
  • It’s important to rotate your sheets (especially fitted/bottom sheets) between several sets to avoid wear and tear accruing on a single sheet. Not doing so may result in a shorter than usual life. Read more about this here

What is stonewashed linen and how is it different?

While highly durable and long lasting, the ‘raw’ linen of old was also uncomfortable. It did, however, get softer with longtime wear — often decades after purchase.

Spinning newly woven linen in a machine with natural Pumice stone helps accelerate this wearing process. It leaves the linen with a buttery ‘sleep ready’ softness and a vintage style that would otherwise take many years to achieve. The drawback being that stone-washed linen is more delicate than raw linen; naturally it has a shorter lifespan. You can expect your fitted/bottom sheet (which receives the most "wear") to last 18 months or longer. This is the case for all linen stonewashed 165gsm bought in Australasia. Please read more about the longevity of your bottom sheet here.

Why do I need to rotate my sheets?

Stone washed linen is already at its maximum softness and therefore requires a little more love than traditional, raw linen. This is especially true of sheets that cover high-friction areas like fitted/bottom sheets. It’s important to rotate your bed linen between several sets to avoid wear and tear accruing on a single sheet. Not doing so may result in a shorter than usual life.

Do different colours have different textures?

Stripes and grid linen (all colours) Natural and Denim, are all more textured than the solid colours. The fabric is made in the same place as the rest of our linen but as they are two different yarns spun together to form a stripe, grid or melange, they result in a more textured feel. The Natural linen is more textured as it is not dyed like the other linen colours.

We find that machine drying them rather than line-drying results in a softer feel and they will soften more over time however, they will never end up the same as the solid colours as that weave will always have "texture".

Why is linen more expensive than other bedding?

Naturally, well-made pure flax bed linen is more expensive than cotton and synthetic bedding. Labour intensive, flax farming requires careful craftsmanship to ensure quality fibre, which being stiff, is difficult to weave during manufacturing. Combined with stone-washing, the cost of producing bed-ready flax linen is generally higher than other textiles.

We are proud to say that our linen does cost LESS to the environment. Made from 100% organic French flax, grown free from pesticides and at a third of the water consumption of cotton, Foxtrot linen is also delivered in compostable packaging.

    Does Linen fade?

Unfortunately linen does fade in the sun as it is a natural fibre. All natural fibres do this. To mitigate this risk, please ensure your linen is kept out of direct sunlight. We recommend purchasing lighter colours for rooms with strong sunlight

    What sizing is your Linen?

Please refer to our bedding sizes information

Is your bedding made from pure linen?

Yes, absolutely! All of our products are made from 100% pure linen from flax plant fibres harvested in France.

Do pillowcases come with the duvets and/or sheets?

The pillowcases are not included as we have found that a lot of our customers like to mix and match the colours...so they can be bought separately on our website. Shipping for pillowcases is free when you buy larger items (in NZ).
